中元祭

農曆七月民間俗稱鬼月，相傳陰司地府的孤魂野鬼將在此期間重返人間，因此，臺灣各地皆舉行中元普度祭典，其中規模最盛大的，莫過於「鷄籠中元祭」，歸咎其因，在於基隆地區歷經外族戰亂侵略、漳泉械鬥、北管子弟社團西皮、福路衝突等歷史背景，造成無數先民的犧牲，而民間觀念認為「死者為大」，且為了彌平族群的對立，因此舉行中元普度以祭祀無主孤魂。除宗教意義之外，「鷄籠中元祭」更保存了祭典科儀、傳統表演藝術、工藝美術等民俗文化，是民間重要的民俗節日慶典，不僅交通部觀光局列入「臺灣十二大地方節慶」之一，並於2008年成為文化部（時為文建會）指定為國家重要文化資產的民俗活動。
